Narrative therapy is a form of therapy developed by Michael White and David Epston. It is based on the philosophy that our lives are composed of a multitude of stories that shape and influence how we perceive ourselves. The relationships we have with other individuals, and with the culture in which we live, form stories. From these stories, we derive meaning about our lives. Our identity—who we are and what we are capable of— is, in part, constructed by these stories. Narrative therapy avoids blaming people and events in our lives for our troubles. It focuses on externalizing rather than internalizing our problems.
The goal of narrative therapy is to empower patients to find the underlying storylines in their lives. These are storylines that they did not originally realize existed, that reveal strengths and positive attributes that they did not see before. Therapists can help patients reinterpret narratives that are oppressive and detrimental to their growth, working with them to reconstruct the narrative in a way that promotes self-esteem and self-confidence. Without even realizing it, we fall victim to believing we are what people label us—“failure,” “black sheep,” “perfectionist”—when our stories are so much more nuanced and complex than that. Labels barely scrape the surface of who we are as individuals. They can trap us into believing that we are one thing, when in fact we are so much more. When we flesh out the narratives in our lives, we open the doors to new solutions and opportunities. In addition, narrative therapy allows us to envision the problem as something that occurs outside of us; we separate ourselves from the problem. When we no longer see the problem as something deeply rooted in ourselves, it becomes more manageable.
