Gestalt Therapy is a form of psychotherapy primarily founded on two core beliefs. One is that the client needs to focus on the experiences and sensations occurring in the present moment. The other is the belief that people are connected to everything in the world around them, and that they engage in relationships with the people and things in their world. Because Gestalt therapy employs an “experiential” approach, therapists use a variety of techniques to encourage clients to “experience” problematic situations during sessions, rather than talking about them.
Gestalt therapy focuses on the “here and now” and not the “what ifs.” It teaches us not to dwell in the past or put energy into worrying about the future. Gestalt therapy views focusing on the past and future as forms of escapism that allow us to avoid what is happening in the present moment. Neglecting to deal with feelings and situations as they occur can create unresolved issues.
This form of therapy also concentrates on the connection of the mind and body, as well as the connections we have with the world around us. It encourages “awareness” of our feelings and interactions. Becoming more aware of our role in the situations and relationships in our lives enables us to assume responsibility for the difficulties we face, thus empowering us to change the situation. By allowing ourselves to become fully present in the here and now, we are given the opportunity to make discoveries about ourselves and the world we live in. By being more “aware,” we gain the clarity and insight to correct the behaviors that disengage us from the world. Gestalt therapy teaches us to identify with all aspects of ourselves, and not to neglect or suppress parts of ourselves. It helps us dismantle the barriers that prevent us from realizing our full potential and promotes a sense of self-acceptance.
