At Recovering Souls, we recognize the devastating impact addiction can have on the family as a whole. What some people do not understand is that addiction is a family disease. Oftentimes, families are so focused on getting their loved ones the help they need, that they neglect to take care of their own needs. Families suffer alongside the addict who is in active addiction and must undergo their own recovery process. Just like the addict needs to learn that he or she is powerless over drugs and alcohol, the family has to come to terms with the fact that they are powerless over their loved one’s addiction. Therefore, our goal is to not only treat the individual who is struggling with addiction, but to educate family members about drug and alcohol addiction and provide treatment for the family as a whole.
Family group counseling focuses as much on healing the damage done in the past as it does on helping the family move forward. For some, it can be an adjustment when their loved one returns from treatment. People may became accustom to playing certain roles within their family and letting go of those roles—even if they are dysfunctional—can be difficult. Counseling can prepare for the changes that may occur when your family member returns home. Family group counseling can also benefit couples who have been active in addiction together and are looking to start a new life in sobriety with one another. You will also have the opportunity to attend support groups for the family and friends of alcoholics and addicts such as Al-Anon, Alateen, and Nar-Anon.
During family group counseling, you will work with a licensed therapist and learn how to:
- Establish healthy boundaries
- Identify unhealthy or dysfunctional roles within the family dynamic
- Move from co-dependent to inter-dependent relationships
- Identify enabling behaviors and replace them with healthy behaviors
- Re-establish trust
- Provide healthy and appropriate support for your loved one
- Communicate openly and effectively
- Heal as a family
