And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Our addiction isolated us from the ones we loved and cared about. Either we avoided them so they wouldn’t see how bad things had gotten, or they had grown tired of the pain and heartache we caused them. A pervasive sense of loneliness overtook us. Even in a room full of people, we felt entirely alone. We needed something in our lives that was bigger than us and bigger than our addiction. We wanted to be part of something and to have genuine relationships with those around us. We wanted to have the reassurance that when we started to fall, someone would be there to catch us. It was a big relief to us when we learned upon entering treatment that we never had to be alone again.
Florida is home to numerous Christian treatment centers and sober living facilities. This influx of treatment centers has created one of the biggest Christian recovery communities in the country. Florida’s big Christian recovery community provides the support and comfort that so many of us longed for in our active addiction. The Bible tells us that we must, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). Being part of a community requires that must be there for others so that they in return can be there for us. One alcoholic helping another is the very basis of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. It is through helping others that we heal and grow. Being part of a Christian recovery community also forces us to be accountable. Learning how to be accountable for our actions is a big part of staying sober. In our active addiction, we often failed to do the things we said we were going to do. As part of a recovery community, we have to “suit up and show up.”
